Interferon is naturally increased with Probiotics?

There is research to strongly support the view that the body’s natural virus-fighter, interferon can be restored to normal levels with a “live probiotic" containing enough beneficial microbials.

Interferons make virus-infected host cells self-destruct to prevent infecting the whole organism. Failure of the interferon system is assumed to be responsible for the success of viral infections and cellular degenerative diseases and dysbyosis. It is generally accepted that interferon forces infected human cells to self-destruct and shorten their lifespan, thus speeding recovery.

“A drop in interferon levels may play a role in the defective immune response against Epstein Barr virus (EBV), previously described in fatigued athletes. Most people have been infected with EBV; it can cause a number of diseases, including mononucleosis, and it has been implicated in chronic fatigue syndrome. However, the virus is usually kept in check by interferon. Researchers tested for EBV in 24 saliva samples taken from eight fatigued athletes before and after receiving a 1-month course of the probiotic capsules. In addition, interferon levels were measured in blood samples. Prior to treatment, five of the subjects had EBV in their saliva -- that is, they were shedding the virus because it was not being reined in; after probiotic treatment, just one showed signs of virus shedding.” British Journal of Sports Medicine, April 2006.

The digestive tract is home to more than 100 trillion bacteria and there are more than 400 species of the good and bad bugs that, when not destroyed, naturally co-exist to maintain a balance of about 85 percent “friendly” bacteria and about 15 percent “unfriendly”.  Probiotic literally means pro-life, in other words life-supporting. These microorganisms sustain the ecological systems of the digestive tract. Probiotics contrast starkly with antibiotics which are anti-life. While probiotics support and sustain the integrity of beneficial bacteria in the gut, antibiotics indiscriminately destroy the good and the bad bugs in the intestinal tract and, although taken for very valid reasons, inadvertently create an imbalance.

Probiotics displace and consume hardened wastes in the intestines, and create conducive environments for beneficial bacteria which act as immune regulators to prepare the walls of the intestine to properly absorb nutrients from the food that we eat.
Friendly bacteria also help in the manufacture of some A, B, and K vitamins. These probiotic bacteria also produce substances called bacteriocins which are natural antibiotics that suppress the population of unfriendly bacteria. They produce specialized acids that hinder the colonization of the harmful bacteria, make the gut environment acidic and unfriendly to disease-causing pathogens.  In situations where the populations of the bad bugs outnumber the good bugs, dysbiosis occurs. Many scientists believe that intestinal dysbyosis is the etiology of all human disease.

In addition, 75 percent of the lymphatic system is located in the gut and its tissues are referred to as gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT). To sustain the integrity of the lymphatic system, we must sustain the integrity of the gut (balance as suggested before). An efficient lymphatic system is necessary for an efficient immune system.

After antibiotic therapy or prolonged illness it makes sense to use good quality probiotics along with making lifestyle changes to maintain our digestive health (symbiosis) and support our general health.
