Honeymoon Cystitis

Honeymoon cystitis is the common name for cystitis that starts when a couple first begin a sexual relationship. It affects women almost exclusively, can occur at any age, and is associated with frequency of sexual intercourse.

As with any type of urinary tract infection, honeymoon cystitis is generally caused by bacteria, and it is apparent that the spontaneous nature of sex when a couple first get together could involve having sex without taking appropriate hygiene precautions.

For some people this wouldn’t matter – some people have never heard of cystitis or urinary tract infections, and they never will. For others, it is a different story. Once the mistake has been made, the bacteria get into the female urethra and from there into the bladder, and things start to get uncomfortable as the bacteria adapt to their new environment and establish their ideal home, taking their nutrients from the urine, and attaching to the lining of the bladder, releasing toxins that cause inflammation to expose the deeper layers of the bladder epithelium.

The pain caused by the actions of these marauding and opportunistic bacteria can be excruciating, and has ruined many a honeymoon, and many a budding new relationship. If the infection is not dealt with swiftly it can spread upwards to the kidneys and cause a kidney infection. Even if this doesn’t happen, bacteria can become deeply embedded in the lining of the bladder, and cause a cycle of recurring infections.

The culprit bacteria of honeymoon cystitis are usually E.coli, although Klebsiella and Citrobacter are  relatively common. These are bacteria that commonly live harmlessly in the gut and are therefore found in faeces, and in fecal contamination of the skin, and of the environment. In most cases the bacteria thrive in an acidic environment, and E.coil in particular are acid-friendly, since most of the E.coli in the environment have at some time passed through the gut of an ox and can survive acids 1000 times more acidic than urine ever gets. These bacteria can metabolise acids in the urine and thus create all the necessary amino acids and proteins that they need to divide and multiply.

The implications of this are interesting; it makes it clear that the old idea of drinking Cranberry Juice (which puts Hippuric acid into the urine), and swallowing vast amounts of Vitamin C in the form of Ascorbic acid results in feeding the bacteria that cause the urine infections, making the infection worse rather than better.

Although doctors will prescribe antibiotics for honeymoon cystitis, it is also the case that many bacteria are antibiotic-resistant even at the time they cause the first infection in a new individual:  they are often the genetic descendants of bacteria that have previously survived the most commonly used antibiotics, either in the body of the host, in the body of the person the contamination came from, or in the body of an ox or a chicken that has been fed antibiotics.
This can cause problems, because when antibiotics don’t work, antibiotic-resistant bacteria are left in the urinary tract to multiply and pass on their resistant genes. And when more powerful antibiotics are used, the bacteria can become multi-antibiotic resistant. Then the medical profession can run out of options. It is at this point that people turn to alternative health to find a solution.
