Could Antibiotics make you Gain Weight, and Could a good Probiotric Blend help you lose or maintain your weight?
Here at Sweet Cures, we have long known about the debilitating effects on the body of taking antibiotics, especially the broad spectrum ‘big hitters’.
Apart from the fact that all drugs have toxic side-effects, and antibiotics are in a class of their own when it comes to side-effects, the trouble with antibiotics is that they kill off the friendly gut bacteria that we symbiotically depend upon.
Whilst of course it is important to defeat the pathogens that cause disease, not enough attention is given to the absolute dependence we have on our friendly bacteria, and when antibiotics kill them off or seriously deplete their numbers, the pathogens (often naturally antibiotic-resistant) take over, and apart from the almost inevitable Thrush, can cause everything from IBS symptoms to ulcerative colitis and even, in the case of pathogens like MRSA and Clostridium Difficile, an unpleasant death.
Doctors don’t have a lot of choice, when such pathogens are detected but to give more and more powerful antibiotics in the hope of killing off the pathogens.
But the trouble is, they are giving the very thing that caused the problem in the first place. It’s clear that when the gut bacteria are healthy, we don’t get such pathogenic takeover, so we have a way of dealing with the pathogens naturally. Surely it’s time that someone considered putting the natural enemies of intestinal pathogens to work against them?
An interesting article in The Independent by Science Editor Steve Connor covers another aspect of antibiotic use which is unlikely to be mentioned by a doctor or dentist prescribing such drugs – they may cause weight gain. A recent study in Denmark has shown that people with fewer friendly bacteria are more likely to be obese. Source
The natural corollary of this is that probiotics must be good for people trying to lose weight, or maintain their weigh.
