Osteoporosis is a name for loss of bone mass and density cause by a decrease in bone mineralisation. This means bone can become brittle, and symptoms such as vertebral collapse or partial collapse can occur.
Without intervention, the problem gets worse with age, and the loss of bone density may seriously affect mobility, with easily occurring fractures, crumbling hip bones, and both long bone pain and joint pains.
Commonly, symptoms will arise with age-related hormonal changes, or after taking a course of drug treatment that has osteoporosis-like side effects. For example fluoroquinolone-type antibiotics can cause symptoms of fluorine poisoning, and because of the way fluorine binds to calcium and leaches it to the surface of bones and teeth, there can be a lot or resultant pain, and bone and teeth structures can become hard on the surface, but brittle and prone to damage. Other drugs, and in particular, types of antibiotics, may cause similar symptoms by leaching of calcium or depletion of collagen which helps bind bone cells.
Whilst it would be good for every individual diagnosed with osteoporosis symptoms to be able to identify the cause of the problem, it often proves impossible in practise. Tests involving scans and often painful bone sampling can only prove that osteoporosis exists, and will give an Osteoporosis diagnosis, but will rarely find the cause. The best option for people suffering from osteoporosis would seem to be to concentrate in alleviating or reversing the symptoms by helping their body regain bone density where possible, and prevent further loss.
Although many doctors consider osteoporosis to be an inevitable part of the aging process, the medical options are limited. If osteoporosis is not discovered until the problem has progressed to the point where bones are breaking, and joints are crumbling, surgical intervention and drug therapy can be given, and the success rate of bone and joint replacement operations is improving all the time. However, some of the drugs that are given to try to slow down progression of osteoporosis, or at least stop the worst of the pain, can be toxic and have their own side effects. It is not the place here to go into detail of the various drugs that have found to be useful, but a doctor should be able to advise.
On the other hand, many people believe that osteoporosis is not an inevitable part of the aging process, and have shown that it is possible to stop its ravages, and in many cases to reverse the symptoms, just as it is possible to reverse other symptoms of degeneration by stopping the causes of the problems that are occurring.
People therefore look for alternative natural options to medical Osteoporosis treatment, and these usually involve mild impact exercise - because the body builds bone density naturally when bones are subjected to mild but frequent impact, combined with sometimes extensive dietary change to slow down or stop the leaching of calcium from the bones and teeth. This dietary change can also involve taking a number of supplements which either are missing from the diet, or necessary to help the body repair the damages that have occurred, such as Black Cohosh, Calcium and Potassium supplements, Red Clover extract, Vitamin B12, Wild Yam extracts, and Zinc, which helps to bind calcium.
For reversing or at least halting bone demineralisation, and thus self-treating 'Osteoporosis', there is also the well known strategy of using glyconutrient (rare sugar) supplements such as Glucosamine, usually taken with Chondroitin Sulphate, which involves a N-acetylgalactosamine <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N-Acetylgalactosamine> (sugar) and Glucuronic acid <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glucuronic_acid>
alternating chain, and Xylotene®, which is a proprietary blend of the rare sugar Xylose, and the sugar alcohol, Xylitol. Glucosamine with Chondoitrin is particularly useful for supporting joint mobility, whilst Xylotene primarily helps maintain healthy bones and teeth, where it may help transmembrane calcium transport by facilitating the body's use of Calcium Orotate, which has its own special properties. Xylotene should also assist with connective tissue repair, whilst Xylose, rarely found without its derivative Xylitol in the wild, contributes to the effectiveness of Chondroitin Sulfate, directly utilised in forming cartilage.
People using a Xylotene supplement may also wish to supplement their diet with oily fish on a regular basis, or at least take 6 capsules per day of Omega 3 oils, and 3 per day of Omega 6.
Overall therefore, a strategy for reversing bone demineralisation or Osteoporosis symptoms, that could work well, should be a combined approach, and it would probably be a mistake to think that any one thing on its own could reverse a process of degeneration that has been taking place for years. The intelligent way, for people who really want to make a difference, is the combined approach:
* Regular physical exercise, preferably with some regular mild
impact built in:
* A healthy, natural diet, with a huge variety of fruits, nuts,
and veg, free of junk food, high in oily fish or if vegetarian, good oils like extra virgin olive oil, rape seed oil, sunflower seed oil, and starflower oil;
* Supplementation with rare sugars like Glucosamine and Xylotene
(not to be confused with Xylitol on its own),
* And finally, although it has not previously been mentioned in
this article, many people consider taking a good quality probiotic blend to help normalise the immune system and enable them to get the best out of the nutrients and micronutrients they consume, since the inability to properly adsorb these can be reversed by balanced gut bacteria that release the required enzymes and themselves produce micronutrients important to all aspects of bodily function, digestion, and health.
