Drinking your own urine is becoming as popular as morning coffee for those who are chasing longevity these days. It is generally better known as Urine Therapy but, of course, this activity is not new.  It has been around a very long time and males and females have happily drunk their own and others’ urine in an attempt to restore health, and stay forever young.

The recorded history of drinking urine for therapeutic purposes dates back to the Roman Empire when public urinals, male and female, were free and open for residents to both contribute to and benefit from.

John W Armstrong suggests in his book: The Water of Life: A Treatise on Urine Therapy (State Mutual Books, NY) that urine is a cure all and cites numerous case studies of people suffering from cancer, diabetes, lung disease, congestive heart disease, Bright's Disease, malaria, fevers, wounds, burns, bronchial asthma, and many other maladies, including symptoms associated with UTIs and bladder infections.

And strange as this all seem to you if you  are suffering from the symptoms of a bladder infection  or UTI and with urine  that is cloudy, foul smelling, and disgusting, numerous well known urinophiles have followed in Armstrong’s footsteps: Ghandi, John Lennon, Jim Morrison, and 3 million Chinese to name but a few.

In defence of this apparent strangeness, “Enzymes of America” is about to market its first major urine product called Urokinase, an enzyme that it is claimed dissolves blood clots and is used to treat victims of heart attacks.

We are almost back to Ancient Rome.  “Enzymes of America” has designed a special filter that collects important urine proteins, and these filters have been installed in all of the male urinals in the 10,000 portable outhouses owned by the Porta-John company, a subsidiary of Enzymes of America.”

So, is Urine therapy exactly what the doctor ordered?

Perhaps yes and sometimes definitely no.

Unfortunately, though most of the time urine is sterile in both males and females, when it is not, shouldn’t you think about sorting out the symptoms of Bladder Infection and UTIs  before recycling it.

E.coli ( a major cause of Bladder Infections and UTIs in both males and females) like most of all to attach to a sugar-type substance called D-Mannose, which our body produces naturally as part of the walls of cells, particularly abundantly in the bladder and urinary tract, providing the ideal docking ports for the E.coli. We don't have perfect bodies, and nature has really messed things up here, because if it weren't for the D-Mannose in the cell walls, any E.coli that managed to get up the urethra would be flushed away in normal urination. But they are not. They get up there, and they find a docking port, and they start to multiply. And that's when the trouble begins. They burrow their way into the walls of the bladder, which somehow doesn't recognise them as enemies, but embraces them as if they were fond friends. It is one of the bacterial survival mechanisms. It is their job to perpetuate their genes. Burying themselves in the bladder wall helps them to create repeat attacks of cystitis (bladder infections and UTIs), multiplying their numbers in exponential profusion.

When you take a warm drink with a spoonful of D-Mannose in it, (you'll hardly taste the D- mannose) most of it gets into your urine within an hour, and attaches to the fimbria or pili of the bacteria that cause most bladder infections and UTIs. This stops the bacteria from sticking to you, and they get flushed away naturally when you urinate. This is effective for both males and females.
